人類對死者埋葬處所做的一種紀念性的載體，一般以石質材料製成，也有使用木材、金屬材料和其他材料製成。 中國古代“墓而不墳”，只在地下掩埋，地表不樹標誌。後來逐漸有了地面堆土的墳，又有了墓碑。 人去逝後，如要立墓，大多都要有墓碑文。墓碑文上一般刻記死者的姓名、籍貫、成就，逝世日期和立碑人的姓名及與死者的關係。寫碑文應對死者充滿敬意和感情。民國二十二年《河南通志·睢縣採訪稿·袁可立墓碑》：\袁尚書可立墓碑，在（睢州）城南四里許，劉店村東里許。碑高八尺，上蛟螭，下贔屓，高約丈餘，尚稱體制。\
