搜尋，一是指仔細查詢，搜尋，如徐懷中 《西線軼事》八：“在樹棵裡搜尋了好久，什麼也沒有發現。”也指往來貌；接續貌。如《文選·王褒》：“玄猿悲嘯，搜尋乎其間。”李善注：“搜尋，往來貌。”

早期的 搜尋引擎是把因特網中的資源伺服器的地址收集起來，由其提供的資源的型別不同而分成不同的目錄，再一層層地進行分類。人們要找自己想要的資訊可按他們的分類一層層進入，就能最後到達目的地，找到自己想要的資訊。這其實是最原始的方式，只適用於因特網資訊並不多的時候。隨著因特網資訊按幾何式增長，出現了真正意義上的 搜尋引擎，這些搜尋引擎知道網站上每一頁的開始，隨後搜尋因特網上的所有 超級連結，把代表超級連結的所有詞彙放入一個數據庫。這就是現在搜尋引擎的原型。
