哈欠是一種屬條件反射的深呼吸活動，人在疲倦時大腦神經支配的一種生理反應，在日常生活中表達沉悶、瞌睡、或舒緩緊張情緒，一次打哈欠的時間大約為6秒鐘，在這期間人閉目塞聽，全身神經、肌肉得到完全放鬆；需要臉部的肌肉運動來完成，所以可以透過有意識地咬緊牙關來抑制。有的時候，人因頭腦供氧不足時，也會打哈欠。
