　　宋國有個農夫正在田裡翻土。突然，他看見有一隻野兔從旁邊的草叢裡慌慌張張地竄出來，一頭撞在田邊的樹墩子上，便倒在那兒一動也不動了。農民走過去一看：兔子死了。因為它奔跑的速度太快，把脖子都撞折***shé***了。農民高興極了，他一點力氣沒花，就白撿了一隻又肥又大的野兔。他心想;要是天天都能撿到野兔，日子就好過了。從此，他再也不肯出力氣種地了。每天，他把鋤頭放在身邊，就躺在樹墩子跟前，等待著第二隻、第三隻野兔自己撞到這樹墩子上來。世上哪有那麼多便宜事啊。農民當然沒有再撿到撞死的野兔，而他的田地卻荒蕪了。

　　In the Three Kingdoms Period, during a battle between Cao Cao and Liu Bei, the latter ordered his generals Zhao Yun and Huang Zhong to capture Cao Cao’s supplies. Cao Cao led a large force against Zhao Yun, who retreated as fas as the gates of his camp. There, he ordered that the banners be lowered and the war drums silenced, and that the camp gates be left wide open. Zhao Yun then stationed***安置，駐紮*** his troops in ambush***埋伏*** nearly. When Cao Cao arrived and saw the situation, he immediately suspected a trap and withdrew his forces.

　　《三國志。蜀志。趙雲傳》中記載：在一次戰鬥中，蜀將黃忠殺死了曹將夏侯淵，並奪取了戰略要地。曹操非常惱火，把米倉移到漢水旁的北山腳下，親率20萬大軍向陽平關大舉進攻。黃忠、張著商議趁夜燒劫魏軍糧草。臨行前趙雲和他們約定了返回時間，過期不歸就帶兵出寨接應，正與曹操親自統率的部隊相遇。趙雲同曹軍廝殺起來，把曹軍打得丟盔棄甲，救回了黃忠和張著。曹操沒有善罷甘休，指揮大隊人馬追殺趙雲，直撲蜀營。趙雲的副將張翼見趙雲已退回本寨，後面追兵來勢凶猛，便要關閉寨門拒守。趙雲下令大開營門，偃旗息鼓，準備放曹軍進來;一面又命令弓弩手埋伏在寨內外，然後自己單槍匹馬站在門口等候敵人。生性多疑的曹操追到寨門口，心想，寨門大開，必有伏兵，即匆忙下令撤退。就在曹操調頭後退的時候，蜀軍營裡金鼓齊鳴，殺聲震天，飛箭如雨般向曹軍射擊。曹軍驚慌失措，奪路逃命，自相踐踏。趙雲趁勢奪了曹軍的糧草，殺死了曹軍大批兵馬，得勝回營。 後來，人們常用“偃旗息鼓”來比喻休戰、無聲無息或停止行動。

　　during the warring states period ***475-221bc***, the king of the state of qi was very fond of listening to yu ensembles. he often got together 300 yu players to form a grand music. the king treated his musician very well. a man named nanguo heard about that and he managed to become a member of the band, even though he wan not good at playing the instrument at all. whenever the band played for the king, nanguo just stood in the line and pretended to play. nobody realized he was making no sound at all. as a result, he enjoyed his treatment just as the other musician did. when the king died, his son became the new ruler who also liked the music played on the yu. however, he preferred solos so that he ordered the musicians to play the yu one by one. therefore, nanguo had to run out of the palace.
