Genuine and Fake Tripods of the Han Dynasty真假漢鼎
A civilian named Shentu Dun in Luoyang obtained an unearthed tripod of the Han Dynasty from Shenchuan, Chang' an.
On the tripod, the crisscross designs of clouds and ancient hornless dragons were bright and clear. Lu Sheng, his neighbour on the west, took a fancy to it instantly. He asked a coppersmith to cast a tripod in imitation, soaked and dyed it with a strange decoction, dug a pit and buried it underground.
After three years, he dug it out. Owing to the decoction and corrosion of the earth, the copper surface of the tripod changed and looked very much like Shentu Dun's genuine tripod.
One day, Lu Sheng presented this fake tripod to an influential official, who was so pleased as if he had got a treasure that he invited guests to a banquet to appreciate it together.
At the time, Shentu Dun was also present. He knew in his heart that Lu Sheng's tripod was a fake. He said:
"I also have a tripod of about the same shape as this one. But I don't know which one is genuine."
The influential official asked him to fetch it at once. After he examined it for a long time, he said:
"This one is not genuine."
The guests also chimed in and said one after another:
"It is indeed not genuine."
Shentu Dun was quite perturbed and argued on just grounds, but the others rallied together to attack him, ridiculed and even insulted him, so he said no more.
When he returned home, he sighed:
"I didn't know until today the power of authority, which can confound right with wrong and pass off the fake as the real thing."
In ancient times, a man surnamed Dong in the State of Wei was interested in nothing but keeping cats.
He kept over 100 cats in his home, which caught and ate all the rats in the house.
Later, as there were no more rats, the cats were so hungry that they meowed all the time. Dong had to buy meat from the market every day to feed them.
Day after day, year after year, the cats multiplied. As they ate meat every day, they even didn't know there were rats in the world which could be caught and eaten. They meowed whenever they were hungry, and whenever they meowed, they were fed with meat. After they ate their fill, they were happy and carefree, lazy and sluggish, and had nothing to do all day.
In the south of the city, one house was plagued with rats. The rats ran amuck in swarms. Once it so happened that a rat fell into a jar. The master of the house hastened to Dong's home to borrow a cat to catch the rat.
The cat from the Dong family saw the rat in the jar stick up its pointed ears, stare with a pair of pitch-black eyes, shake its red whiskers and squeak. The cat didn't know what a freak the rat was. It only followed the rat moving around on the mouth of the jar, and dared not get into it.
The master was furious at this and pushed the cat down into the jar. At this moment, the cat was panic-stricken and howled loudly at the rat. After a while, the rat eventually found that this cat had no other tricks, so it bit the cat's foot. The Dong's cat was so frightened that it exerted all its strength and made one jump out of the jar and ran away.
Gouging Out Flesh to Conceal the Pearl剜股藏珠
There was a treasure mountain on the sea, where there were many, many rare treasures shining with brilliant light and dazzling the eyes.
A seaman got a pearl of 1 can ***1/30 metre*** in diameter, which glistened brightly. He took a ship to take it home.
But before the ship had sailed for 100 li, all of a sudden black clouds rolled all over the sky, and a strong wind blew to unleash huge waves. The ship was tossed about violently. A flood dragon was seen emerging from the stormy sea and looking very terrifying.
The crew advised the seaman:
"It seems that the flood dragon wants to have your pearl. Please throw it into the sea at once; otherwise you will get us into trouble."
At the moment, the seaman was in a dilemma. He couldn't bear to part with the pearl; on the other hand, he was afraid of the imminent disaster. His head was covered with perspiration from anxiety. After a while, with his teeth clenched to endure the pain, he gouged out a piece of flesh from his thigh to conceal the pearl there. The storm on the sea subsided at once.
As soon as the seaman got home, he took out the dazzling pearl immediately. But not long afterwards he died of the festering wound in his thigh.
