　　Gong Zhiqiao obtained a piece of fine Chinese tung wood and made a qin stringed musicalinstrument out of it.

　　工之僑得到一塊優質的桐木料，用它製作了一把琴，

　　When installed with strings and plucked, it gave out a wonderful sound, harmonious andpleasing to the ear.

　　安上琴絃，一彈，發出金玉一般的聲音，和諧悅耳。

　　Gong Zhiqiao thought this was the finest instrument in the world,

　　工之僑自以為這是世界上最好的一把琴了。

　　so he presented it to the Tai Chang Si Qing a high official in charge of rites and protocol of theancestral temple who had it examined by an imperial musician, but the musician disdained tohave a look at it.

　　於是，他就拿去獻給太常寺卿。太常讓皇家的樂工檢驗，樂工卻不屑一顧，

　　He only said“Not ancient!”and returned the instrument.

　　Gong Zhiqiao had to take it home and asked a lacquerer to paint many crackles on theinstrument in imitation of an ancient qin,

　　工之僑只好把琴拿回家，讓漆工仿古，在琴上漆出許多裂紋，

　　and asked a sculptor to carve on it some inscriptions of ancient scholars. Then he put it in abox and buried it underground.

　　又讓雕匠在琴上刻了古人的題字，然後裝進匣子，埋在地下。

　　After one year, Gong Zhiqiao took out the instrument from underground,and went to themarket to sell it.

　　一年之後，工之僑把琴從地下取出來，趕到集市上去賣。

　　It happened that an influential personage was passing by. He bought it with 100 pieces of goldand presented it to the imperial court.

　　有位顯貴之人正好路過，出百金買下了這把琴，並把它獻給了朝廷。

　　The imperial musicians vied with each other to look at it and praised in unison:

　　A civilian named Shentu Dun in Luoyang obtained an unearthed tripod of the Han Dynastyfrom Shenchuan, Chang’an.

　　洛陽，有一位平民叫申屠敦，他從長安深川得到了一尊出土的漢鼎。

　　On the tripod, the crisscross designs of clouds and ancient hornless dragons were bright andclear.

　　鼎上，雲和蝠交錯的花紋，燦爛清晰。

　　Lu Sheng, his neighbour on the west,took a fancy to it instantly.

　　申屠敦家西邊的一位鄰居魯生一見到就十分喜愛，

　　He asked a coppersmith to cast a tripod in imitation, soaked and dyed it with a strangedecoction,dug a pit and buried it underground.

　　讓銅匠模仿著也鑄了一尊，用一種奇特的藥浸染之後，挖了一個坑，把它埋在地下。

　　After three years, he dug it out.Owing to the decoction and corrosion of the earth,

　　過了三年，他把鼎從地下挖出來一看，由於藥物和泥土的鏽蝕，

　　the copper surface of the tripod changed and looked very much like Shentu Dun’s genuinetripod.

　　表面的銅質起了變化，跟申屠敦的真的漢鼎極其相似。

　　One day,Lu Sheng presented this fake tripod to an influential official,

　　一天，魯生將這尊假漢鼎獻給了一位權貴。

　　who was so pleased as if he had got a treasure that he invited guests to a banquet toappreciate it together.

　　權貴如獲至寶，便大宴賓客，請大家共同欣賞。

　　At the time,Shentu Dun was also present. He knew in his heart that Lu Sheng’s tripod was afake.He said:

　　當時，申屠敦也在座。他心裡頭最明白，魯生的那尊是假的，就說:

　　“I also have a tripod of about the same shape as this one. But I don’t know which one isgenuine.”

　　“我也有一尊漢鼎，形狀和這尊差不多，但不知哪一尊是真的。”

　　The influential official asked him to fetch it at once. After he examined it for a long time, hesaid:

　　權貴立即叫他搬過來，左右端詳了很久，說：

　　“This one is not genuine.”

　　“這尊不是真的!”

　　The guests also chimed in and said one after another:“It is indeed not genuine.”

　　眾賓客也附和著，一個接一個地說:“的確不是真的!”

　　Shentu Dun was quite perturbed and argued on just grounds,but the others rallied together toattack him,ridiculed and even insulted him, so he said no more.

　　申屠敦心中很不平靜，據理爭辯。眾人竟群起而攻之，冷嘲熱諷，甚至羞辱，他便不再做聲了。

　　When he returned home, he sighed:

　　回到家裡，申屠敦唉聲嘆氣:

　　“I didn’t know until today the power of authority, which can confound right with wrong andpass off the fake as the real thing.”

　　“我今天才知道權勢的威力，可以顛倒是非，以假亂真。”

　　There was a treasure mountain on the sea, where there were many,many rare treasuresshining with brilliant light and dazzling the eyes.

　　海上，有一座寶山。寶山上，有許許多多奇珍異寶，光芒四射，非常耀眼。

　　A seaman got a pearl of 1 can 1/30 metre in diameter, which glistened brightly. He took aship to take it home.

　　一個海員得到一顆直徑一寸的明珠，金燦燦的，便乘船把它運回家。

　　But before the ship had sailed for 100 li,all of a sudden black clouds rolled all over the sky,and astrong wind blew to unleash huge waves.

　　可是，航行不到百里，突然間，滿天烏雲滾滾，颳起了大風，掀起了巨浪，

　　The ship was tossed about violently. A flood dragon was seen emerging from the stormy seaand looking very terrifying.

　　船身顛簸得很厲害。人們只見一條蛟龍，在驚濤駭浪中出沒，樣子非常可怕。

　　The crew advised the seaman:

　　船工勸告海員說:

　　“It seems that the flood dragon wants to have your pearl.

　　“看樣子，這條蛟龍想要得到您的這顆明珠啊!

　　Please throw it into the sea at once; otherwise you will get us into trouble.”

　　請您趕快把它拋到海里去吧，否則就會連累了我們。”

　　At the moment,the seaman was in a dilemma. He couldn’t bear to part with the pearl;on theother hand, he was afraid of the imminent disaster.

　　這時候，海員左右為難:丟掉吧，實在捨不得;不丟吧，又怕大難臨頭，急得滿頭大汗。

　　His head was covered with perspiration from anxiety.After a while, with his teeth clenched toendure the pain,he gouged out a piece of flesh from his thigh to conceal the pearl there. Thestorm on the sea subsided at once.

　　過了一會兒，他咬緊牙關，忍著痛，宛開大腿上的一塊肉，把明珠藏了進去。海上的風浪立即小了。

　　As soon as the seaman got home, he took out the dazzling pearl immediately. But not longafterwards he died of the festering wound in his thigh.

　　這個海員回到家裡後，連忙取出了耀眼的明珠。但是不久，他因大腿的傷口潰爛而死了。
