Leaving the Net Open on Three Sides
One day, King Tang, the founder of the Shang Dynasty, sawa man arranging a net on all sides and praying to the deity:
"Let those that fly down from the sky, those that come out of the ground, and those that come running from all directions all run into my net!"
Tang said:
"Well, isn't this catching the whole lot in one net?"
Tang went forward and took away the net on three sides, leaving only one side there. Then he said to the man:
"Now please pray again! You can say thus: In the past, the spiders have spun nets. Now people have learned to make nets too. You birds and animals, those that want to turn left can go to the left; those that want to turn right can go to the right; those that want to fly can soar; those that want to get into holes can get into holes. I only catch those that are doomed to die."
The much-told tale of King Tang's leaving the net open on three sides spread far and wide at once. When the people of the states south of the Han River heard of it, they all said:
"King Tang of Shang bestows favour even upon birds and animals. He is so lenient that he is truly a benevolent man."
Thereupon, all the 40 small states of the time had a heartfelt admiration for Tang and pledged their allegiance to the Shang Dynasty.
Giving Up Eating for Fear of Choking
In the past, there was a man who had a large appetite. When he ate, he devoured ravenously.
Once he wasn't careful enough so that a fishbone got stuck in his throat. The food was blocked in his esophagus, and he could neither swallow nor vomit. So he called a physician, but the physician could do nothing. The people around looked at him in anxiety. Finally, as he couldn't breathe, he died of choking.
Afterwards, someone went so far as to issue a ban: Eating is forbidden as from today for the reason that no one will be choked to death if people give up eating.
A Young Girl Encounters a Bandit
Once upon a time, there was a young girl wearing a strand of precious pearls around her neck and a jade loop around her waist, and carrying a great deal of gold with her.
One day, while walking in the hills, she encountered a bandit and was very much frightened.
When the bandit saw the gold, silver and other treasures, an evil thought occurred to him. Holding a weapon in his hand, he intended to rob her. The young girl was scared out of her wits. Trembling all over and not daring to look at him squarely in the face, she quickly bent and knelt down before the bandit, begging
him piteously, and saying that she was even willing to marry him to be his concubine.
Yet, the atrocious bandit still killed her in the end.
It is thus clear that one should never expect mercy from a bandit.
