:The mouse
A philosophical mouse spoke loudly in praise of nature's goodness for having made the mice such particular objects of her concern and protection.
"For," she said, "one half of us is provided by her with wings, so that if all here below were killed by cats, she could easily restore our extinguished race by means of the bats."
The good little mouse didn't know that there were also flying cats and thus does our pride chiefly rest on ignorance.
A civilian named Shentu Dun in Luoyang obtained an unearthed tripod of the Han Dynasty from Shenchuan, Chang'an.
On the tripod, the crisscross designs of clouds and ancient hornless dragons were bright and clear. Lu Sheng, his neighbour on the west, took a fancy to it instantly. He asked a coppersmith to cast a tripod in imitation, soaked and dyed it with a strange decoction, dug a pit and buried it underground.
After three years, he dug it out. Owing to the decoction and corrosion of the earth, thecopper surface of the tripod changed and looked very much like Shentu Dun's genuine tripod.
One day, Lu Sheng presented this fake tripod to an influential official, who was so pleased as if he had got a treasure that he invited guests to a banquet to appreciate it together.
At the time, Shentu Dun was also present. He knew in his heart that Lu Sheng's tripod was a fake. He said: "I also have a tripod of about the same shape as this one. But I don't know which one is genuine."
The influential official asked him to fetch it at once. After he examined it for a long time, he said: "This one is not genuine."
The guests also chimed in and said one after another: "It is indeed not genuine."
Shentu Dun was quite perturbed and argued on just grounds, but the others rallied together to attack him, ridiculed and even insulted him, so he said no more.
When he returned home, he sighed: "I didn't know until today the power of authority, which can confound right with wrong and pass off the fake as the real thing."
One day, a big tiger was looking for food in a dense forest. A fox happened to scurry by, so the tiger pounced upon the fox and caught it.
At this time, the fox suddenly hit upon a bright idea to get itself out of the predicament. It boosted its courage and said to the tiger: "Do you dare to eat me?"
Taken aback, the tiger asked: "Why not?"
"Heaven sends me to rule over all you animals. If you eat me, you will defy the order of Heaven. What a nerve!"
Hoodwinked for the moment, the tiger released its claws.
The fox wagged its tail proudly and said: "I will take you to the other animals, and show you my power and prestige."
The fox and the tiger, one in front and the other in back, walked towards the depths of the forest. The fox was very cocky, shaking its head and wagging its tail. The tiger was dubious, looking around.
The boars, deer, gazelles, bares, etc. in the forest saw the fox come swaggering, entirelydifferent from its usual self, and couldn't understand what was the matter. But when they looked behind the fox:"Oh, a big tiger!" The wild animals, large and small, all fled for their lives.
Now the fox was greatly pleased and said to the tiger: "See, who isn't afraid of me?"
