A little Girl
Sitting on a grassy grave, beneath one of the windows of the church, was a little girl. Withher head bent back she was gazing up at the sky and singing, while one of her little handswas pointing to a tiny cloud that hovered like a golden feather above her head. The sun, whichhad suddenly become very bright, shining on her glossy hair, gave it a metallic luster, and it wasdifficult to say what was the color, dark bronze or black. So completely absorbed was she inwatching the cloud to which her strange song or incantation seemed addr0ssed, that she didnot observe me when I rose and went towards her. Over her head, high up in the blue, alark that was soaring towards' the same gauzy cloud was singing, as if in rivalry. As I slowlyapproached the child, I could see by her forehead, which, in the sunshine seemed like a globe ofpearl, and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely. Her eyes, which atone moment seemed blue-gray, at another violet, were shaded by long black lashes, curvingbackward in a most peculiar way, and these matched in hue her eyebrows, and the tress- esthat were tossed about her tender throat and were quivering in the sunlight. All this I did nottake in at once; for at first I could see nothing but those quivering, glittering, changeful eyesturned up into my face. Gradually the other features, especially the sensitive full-lipped mouth, grew upon me as I stood silently gazing. Here seemed to me a more perfect beauty than hadever come to me in my loveliest dreams of beauty. Yet it was not her beauty so much as thelook she gave me that fascinated me, melted me.

Animal And Machine
The body of an animal may well be compared with some machine like a locomotive engine.Indeed, the animal body is a machine. It is a machine composed of many parts, each partdoing some particular kind of work for which a particular kind of structure fits it; and allthe parts are dependent on each other and work together for the accomplishment of thetotal business of the machine. The locomotive must be provided with fuel, such as coal orwood or other combustible substance, the consumption of which furnishes the force orenergy of the machine. The animal body must be provided with fuel, which is called food, whichfurnished similarly the energy of the animal. Oxygen must be provided for the combustion ofthe fuel in the locomotive and of the food in the body. The locomotive is composed ofspecial parts: the fire box for the reception and combustion of fuel; the steam pipes for thecarriage of steam; the wheels for locomotion; the smokestack for throwing off waste. The ani-mal body is similarly composed of parts: the alimentary canal for the reception and assimilationof food; the excretory organs for the throwing off of waste matter; the arteries and veins forthe carriage oxygen and food-holding blood; the legs or wings for locomotion.

Address at Gettysburg
Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation soconceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of thatwar. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those whohere gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that weshould do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow --this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far aboveour poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we sayhere, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicatedhere to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. Itis rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us- that from thesehonoured dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last fullmeasure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain;that this nation, under Cod, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of tilepeople, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
