翻譯是在準確（信）、通順（達）、優美（雅）的基礎上，把一種語言資訊轉變成另一種語言資訊的行為。 翻譯是將一種相對陌生的表達方式，轉換成相對熟悉的表達方式的過程。其內容有語言、文字、圖形、符號和影片翻譯。

翻譯是蛋白質生物合成（基因表達中的一部分，基因表達還包括轉錄）過程中的第二步（轉錄為第一步），翻譯是根據遺傳密碼的中心法則，將成熟的信使RNA分子（由DNA透過轉錄而生成）中“鹼基的排列順序”（核苷酸序列）解碼，並生成對應的特定氨基酸序列的過程。但也有許多轉錄生成的RNA，如轉運RNA（tRNA）、核糖體RNA（rRNA）和小核RNA（snRNA）等並不被翻譯為氨基酸序列。
