年，漢語常用字，讀作nián，最早見於甲骨文，其本義是年成，五穀成熟，即《說文解字》：“年，谷熟也。”引申為一年的收成、年紀、年節、年代、每年的等義，又是時間單位，指地球環繞太陽公轉一次所需的約365又1/4太陽日的週期。

年獸

年獸，是民間神話傳說中的惡魔。從先秦至清，歷代神話、志怪、傳奇、逸事筆記，如《搜神記》、《聊齋志異》均有記載。有三種可能：1、年獸只是近現代人結合春節爆竹驅邪等風俗杜撰傳說，以訛傳訛；2、年獸為某地鄉土傳說，現代人妙筆生花，經網路傳播而廣為流傳；3、確有典籍記載，只是目前還未找到。相傳古時候每到年末的午夜，年獸就會進攻村子，凡被年獸佔領的村子都遭受到殘酷的大屠殺，頭上的犄角就是屠殺武器。屠殺結束後，年獸會吃掉所有人的頭顱。為了防止有人詐死或僥倖逃脫，年獸假裝離開村子後折回來屠殺倖存者，甚至讓村子發生劇烈的晃動。就連嬰兒、孩童都難以倖免。人們利用年獸的兩大弱點，放爆竹(會嚇走年獸)，貼春聯，以驅趕年獸的進攻。
