鋼

鋼，是對含碳量質量百分比介於0.02%至2.11%之間的鐵碳合金的統稱。鋼的化學成分可以有很大變化，只含碳元素的鋼稱為碳素鋼（碳鋼）或普通鋼；在實際生產中，鋼往往根據用途的不同含有不同的合金元素，比如：錳、鎳、釩等等。人類對鋼的應用和研究歷史相當悠久，但是直到19世紀貝氏鍊鋼法發明之前，鋼的製取都是一項高成本低效率的工作。如今，鋼以其低廉的價格、可靠的效能成為世界上使用最多的材料之一，是建築業、製造業和人們日常生活中不可或缺的成分。可以說鋼是現代社會的物質基礎。

鋼，漢語常用字。有兩種讀音：gāng、gàng，即《康熙字典》：“居浪切，岡去聲。義同。”，依據古人書法省筆簡化。 gāng音本義：經過精煉，不含磷砂等雜質的鐵，含碳0.15鋼1.7％，比熟鐵更堅硬更富於彈性，是工業上極其重要的原料，又用作姓。gàng音義引申為“把刀在布、皮、石、或缸沿上用力摩擦幾下，使鋒利些”，“在刀口上加點兒鋼（gāng），重新打造，使更鋒利。
