菸草（拉丁學名：Nicotiana tabacum L.），是茄科菸草屬植物，原產於南美洲，中國南北各省區廣為栽培，是喜溫作物，對溫度的反應比較敏感，不同的溫度條件對菸草的品質、產量影響比較大。 菸草是一年生或有限多年生草本，全體被腺毛；根粗壯；葉矩圓狀披針形、披針形、矩圓形或卵形，頂端漸尖，基部漸狹至莖成耳狀而半抱莖；花序頂生，圓錐狀，多花；花梗長5~20毫米；種子圓形或寬矩圓形，徑約0.5毫米，褐色。

菸葉（學名：Nicotiana tabacum L.）是茄科菸草屬植物，是菸草的別稱。 菸葉是一年生或有限多年生植物。它植株被腺毛，莖高0.7~2米；葉柄不明顯或成翅狀柄，圓錐花序頂生；花萼筒狀或筒狀鐘形，花冠漏斗狀，末端粉紅色；種子圓形或寬矩圓形，黃褐色。原產於南美洲，世界各地有栽培。夏秋季開花結果。 菸葉作菸草工業的原料；全株也可作農藥殺蟲劑；亦可藥用，作麻醉、發汗、鎮靜和催吐劑。
