手掌聯結著人體的前部、手背聯結著人體的後部各種器官，因此身體內部有無異常都可由經、穴傳遞給手的各部位。人的雙手上有十二條正經脈的 86 個經穴和 224 個奇穴，手部集中了與體內所有器官均有關係的穴位。疾病的訊號更會透過神經、血管和經絡反應到指掌的不同部位上來，而指掌的某種部位的形態改變，其中特異性和規律性的改變，就是望手診病的依據。
