　　本書系法國當代著名作家帕尼奧爾的晚期作品，由1952年的電影《泉水姑娘瑪儂》改編而成。女主人公瑪儂一家從城裡搬到普羅旺斯山村繼承的農場裡，準備從事飼養和種植業，享受山林的清淨，卻遭到利慾薰心的爸伯和他的侄兒於戈蘭的暗算，他們想把農場佔為己有。瑪儂家傾家蕩產，家破人亡，住進山洞。於戈蘭一直在追求瑪儂，最後在絕望中自縊身死。爸伯瞭解到他害死的瑪儂之父正是他昔日戀人的遺腹子，而瑪儂竟是他的親孫女。他在陰謀敗露、悔恨交加中離開人世。瑪儂與有情人小學教師終成眷屬。1985年又改編成電影《戀戀山城》和《甘泉瑪儂》。
