手袋，是指具有手挽的各種袋的總稱，而一般手袋廠中的手袋，卻是廣義的手袋，其產品包括：有戶帶的戶袋、背袋；手袋沒帶的稱為銀包、皮夾；還可以叫它為袋，包夾三大類。以廣義的手袋的用途分，有旅行袋、公文袋、時款袋、包裝袋、銀包、腰包、書包、皮夾九類。手袋，最早起源於16世紀初，當時歐洲的皇室貴族流行舉辦舞會。貴族夫人及名媛們為了能隨身攜帶胭脂和口紅，便請裁縫為她們製作一隻只精緻的小口袋，小巧玲瓏，且只能掛在手碗上，因此不會影響她們的舞姿。
