扶養，有廣義與狹義之分。廣義的扶養是指一定範圍的親屬間相互供養和扶助的法定權利義務。它沒有身份、輩分的區別，是贍養、扶養、撫養的統稱·即包括長輩對晚輩的撫養、晚輩對長輩的贍養和平輩親屬間的扶養。我國繼承法、刑法使用扶養一詞·即採用廣義的解釋。從國外立法來看·大多數國家採用廣義說。狹義的扶養·專指夫妻之間和兄弟姐妹等平輩親屬之間相互供養和扶助的法定權利義務。東歐一些國家的立法採用狹義說。我國現行《婚姻法》採用廣義說。
