大家都知道，中國的英語是China，,但是在聯合國大會上中國代表的座位前面的牌子上寫的卻是C-h-i-n-e，a變成了e。這到底是為什麼呢？是不是寫錯了呢?其實沒有寫錯，它只不過繼承了法語的拼寫方式，因為英文的China來自於法語Chine，也就是C-h-i-n-e，而Chine是“秦”的音譯。因為歷史上的秦人當時與西方人有比較密切的貿易往來，所以西方人就把中國叫作“秦”，於是有了法語的Chine，最終有了英語的China。有些地方說中國之所以叫China是因為中國的瓷器很出名，而瓷器在英語裡叫China，所以中國就叫China，這種說法是缺乏根據的。
茶來自於我們中國，英語叫tea。為什麼茶叫tea呢？據說tea來自於閩南語。福建盛產茶葉，鐵觀音這種茶葉非常著名。歐洲人來到福建就經常喝鐵觀音，由於用閩南語說鐵觀音的時候，把鐵說成tea，而且比觀音兩個字響亮，所以歐洲人從此就把鐵觀音說成了tea，後來tea就變成了茶葉的統稱了。
