　　有一則古老的傳說，一位富有的巴格達商人派僕人去市場。人群中有人推擠了僕人一下，他回頭一看，原來是一位身穿黑袍的老婦人。他知道那是“死亡”。僕人趕忙跑回去，一面發抖，一面向主人訴說方才的遭遇，以及“死亡”是如何用奇特的眼神看著他，並露出威脅的表情。

　　僕人乞求主人借他一匹馬，好讓他騎到撒哈拉，免得“死亡”找到他。主人同意了，於是僕人立刻上馬疾馳而去。
