One day, deities from various places came to pay homage to the Emperor of Heaven.
The emperor gave his minister in charge of wine cups the following order:
"Register the names of the deities first, then bestow wine upon them."
The minister registered the names of the deities on bamboo slips, and prepared to bestowwine.
But he kept on working for 3, 000 years and had not finished the registration yet.
The emperor inquired:"Why haven't you finished registering?"
The minister reported:"All the deities have brought their sedan-chair carriers."
The emperor ordered:"Then register the sedan-chair carriers as well."
7, 000 years passed and the registration was still not done.
When the emperor inquired again, the minister had no way out but reported:
"The sedan-chair carriers of the deities have brought their own carriers too."
So the wine was not bestowed after all.
The Emperor of Heaven remained silent for a long time and then heaved a deep sigh.

Being impractical and dull, he looked just like an old pedant.
One day, Fu Xian strolled on the street with measured strides and asked whomever he met:
“Have you seen Wei San?”
Someone pointed to the direction and he walked on unhurriedly with measured strides. Whenhe saw Wei San, he panted for a while, then said:
“I just saw your wife doing needlework under a tree. She was tired and taking a nap.
Your child was playing beside a well, only 3 to 5 chi away from it.It seemed to me that someaccident might happen.
As there is prudent reserve between men and women, it was not convenient for me toawaken your wife in person.
That's why I have come all the way here to tell you.”

The Self-respect of the Buddhist and the Taoist
In the past, there were two clay idols in a temple.
On the left was the idol of Tai Shang Lao Jun,the founder of Taoism, and on the right the idol ofSakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism.
One day, a monk saw the two idols in the temple. He was displeased and said:
“The power of Buddha is infinite. How can we condescend to allow the idol of Sakyamuni to beplaced on the right of that of Tai Shang Lao Jun?”
So the monk moved the Buddhist idol to the left of the Taoist ido1.
Shortly afterwards, there came a Taoist priest. When he saw the situation, he felt offended andsaid:
“Our Taoist doctrine is the highest and unsurpassed. How can we condescend to allow theTaoist idol to be placed on the right of the Buddhist idol?”
So the Taoist priest moved the Taoist idol to the left of the Buddhist idol at once.
Thus, the monk and the Taoist priest kept on moving the two idols right and left until the idolswere broken into pieces in the end.
