Parents in China are willing to spend $100,000 ontheir children's higher education abroad, according to "The Value of Education: Higher and Higher" reportby HSBC.

60% are expected to spend on their children'sundergraduate education and the other 40% onpostgraduate education.

The report said parents in China are the most financially prepared, with over half 55% fundingtheir child's education through savings, investments, or insurance, and over 2/5 43% through a specific education savings or investment plan.

According to the Ministry of Education, China sent 540,000 students to study abroad in 2016, and the trend is increasing.

The report found that Chinese parents prefer for their children to receive a postgraduateeducation abroad 49% more so than an undergraduate education 32%.

One-third of the parents in China said they have either drastically reduced or completelystopped leisure activities or holidays to pay for their children's education.

The report indicates that despite making these sacrifices, 70% still worry that they are notdoing enough for their children.

A college in eastern China that uses big data to identify students in financial difficulty says it has paid out millions of yuan in "stealth subsidies" over the past 13 years.

The University of Science and Technology of China introduced a computer system in 2004 that records and analyzes spending in its campus canteens, and began using it to identify struggling students.

Those who make the list for a subsidy receive an email and have 160 yuan credited to their canteen card. The list is updated on a monthly basis.

According to figures from the student affairs office, the university has paid a subsidy 40,000 times since 2004, providing a total of 6 million yuan to needy students.

"Interestingly, we have found that the canteen expenditures of the credited students does notrise considerably, while their expenditures in campus fruit stores and bookstores will rise afterthey get the money," said Li Feng, deputy director of the student affairs office.
