For most Americans, clocks and watches are very important. They are always aware of them. Inthe morning some people have to get up when it is still dark. Others sleep through severalhours of sunlight. But both groups wake up when they hear their alarm clocks ring. When theyget dressed and eat breakfast, they listen to the radio, and the radio tells them again and againexactly what time it is.

On the way to work or school, people look at their watches. If they think they are going to belate, they hurry. At work, Americans think it is important to arrive at meetings on time. Theirlunch breaks are short, lasting only half an hour or an hour. Late in the afternoon, they checktheir watches often to see how soon they can go home.

In the evenings, however, Americans are more relaxed. They try to arrive on time, but theydon't worry if they are a few minutes late to meet friends in a restaurant. Also, people whoarrive a few minutes late a movie are usually in time to see the main feature film. If a party at afriend's house starts at 8:00, and some people come an hour later, nobody minds.

Americans are used to living by clocks and watches. It is hard for them to understand thatpeople in many parts of the world don't think that time is so important.

  ***2*** meetings

  ***3*** half an hour

Although 79 percent of Americans know nutrition affects health, only 39 percent do everything they can to eat a healthy diet, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Dietetic Association.

If we know we need to eat healthfully, then why aren't we? Actually 40 percent of us fear giving up our favorite foods, and 23 percent are confused by studies on nutrition. 21 percent believe eating well will take too much time and 1 percent mention other obstacles, says Bettye Nowlin, a spokeswoman for the ADA and a nutritionist in Los Angeles.

The ADA offers the following advice on overcoming these stumbling blocks: Eat your favorite foods--just do so in moderation, and explore the large variety of foods out there. Don't take every study as fact. Nowlin suggests that if a new finding sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The ADA suggests these good nutrition diet strategies:

Eat a balanced breakfast: It'll give you the energy to get going and provide the valuable nutrients that can't be made up later in the day.

Keep low-fat, high-fiber snacks handy: Carry along a banana or keep small containers of low-fat yogurt in your refrigerator.

Have a grocery shopping plan: Without a list, you may bypass nutritions foods and choose unhealthy ones.

  參考答案:

  ***1*** balanced

  ***2*** low-fat

  ***3*** shopping plan

  ***4*** healthy foods

  ***5*** favorite dishes

The US has many different kinds of climate. On the west coast, the temperature changes verylittle between summer and winter. In the north cenral states people wear light clothing in winter. In the southwest, the climate is pleasantly warm during the winter but the summer is hot. Inthe east part of the US, summers are usually hot and winters are usually cold. Springtemperature is comfortably warm, and the temperature in autumn is pleasantly cool. Yearsago, people in the cold parts of the US didn't often get fresh vegetables and fresh fruits duringthe winter. Today, however, trucks and trains carry fruits and vegetables very quickly to allparts of the US. In this way, Americans "send climates" to people in other states.
