　　On the 47th floor the custodian emptied the two black garbage cans. Glen watched her for a minute as he stopped to catch his breath. He was almost halfway there. "Don't look down," he thought to himself.

　　47樓的管理員正在清理兩個黑色垃圾桶，葛蘭停下來喘口氣時看了一會兒。他差不多爬到一半了，心裡想著不要往下看。

　　It had taken him three hours to climb to the 48th floor of the 101 building. It would only take him 10 seconds to get back if he wasn't careful.

　　他花了三個小時才爬到101大樓的48層，但萬一不小心掉下去卻只要十秒鐘。

　　It was a good day ***if there ever was a good day to risk one's life*** to scale the tallest building in the world. There was a slight breeze to keep Glen cool.

　　Glen saw the ad in the newspaper. It read "Needed: Brave person to climb Taipei 101." It was a publicity stunt. Taiwan wanted the whole world to know about the newest tallest building in the world and what better way to do it than with a daredevil stunt.

　　葛蘭看到報紙刊登的廣告上寫著：“徵求攀登臺北101的勇士。”這是一場經過宣傳的驚人表演。如果臺灣想讓全世界都知道這棟世界上最高的新建築的話，還有什麼比找個不怕死的人來場驚險演出更有效果呢?

　　So, there Glen was, now almost 99 stories high with the world watching. Never in history has someone performed such a feat. The crowds at the bottom cheered him on as he reached the top.

　　所以葛蘭才會來到這裡爬101，在全世界注目下，目前幾乎爬到第99層了。這樣一種英勇事蹟如果完成，史上便是頭一遭。底下的圍觀群眾在他登頂時一片歡聲雷動，替他加油鼓勵。

　　Shelly saw it a mile away. A big, fat bumblebee. She kept her distance. Already today she had been stung twice. The bees were attracted to the sweet smell of the rare and exotic flowers. Their pink and yellow petals seduced the bees.

　　雪莉是在一英里外看到這隻又大又肥的大黃蜂，她保持距離以策安全，因為她今天已經被蟄兩次了。這些蜜蜂是被這種稀有奇特的花朵的芳香吸引過來的，而這種香味主要來自這種花朵本身粉紅色和黃色相混的花瓣，蜜蜂就是被它們引誘的。

　　But bees were not the only ones seduced by these flowers. Scientists, such as Shelly, traveled all over the world in search of these flowers. It has been proven that the pollen had cancer-curing properties. With only a small dose of this pollen, people with cancer had a better chance of survival.

　　不過被這些特殊的花朵吸引的並不止是蜜蜂而已，像科學家雪莉旅行了全世界，目的就是在尋找這些花朵。它的花粉已經證明具有治療癌症的特性，小小的花粉劑量，就可以讓癌症病人存活的機會提高許多。

　　But, there was only one problem. The nectar from the flower was poisonous. Shelly and her co-worker had to use extreme caution. If the nectar so much as touched one's skin, it developed into an itchy rash that spread and blistered all over the body.

　　不過有個問題就是，這種花的花蜜有毒，雪莉和她同事必須非常小心地使用;這種花蜜一旦接觸到面板，面板就會長出發癢的疹子，接著就會擴散到全身並起水泡。

　　There was no known cure for rash. It was a dangerous job, but for the good of humanity, Shelly accepted the ob and saw it not only as an adventure, but also as a way to help people all over the world.

　　目前還不知道有什麼藥物可以治療。這是一項危險的工作，不過為了全人類的福祉，雪莉接下了這份工作;她不僅視它為一項冒險，同時也是一種幫助世人的方法。

　　：逃跑

　　Red and yellow trimmed skirts whirled past her head like silk halos. Mary hugged her knees.They were bruised and dirty. She watched the gypsies dance around the fire and play theirtambourines.

　　紅邊和黃邊的裙子像絲質光圈一樣在她頭頂上旋轉著。瑪麗抱著她那擦傷的髒膝蓋，看著這群吉普賽人一邊打著鈴鼓，一邊圍繞著火堆起舞。

　　Mary was eight. She lived in an orphanage run by a cruel woman. Each night Mary was givenstale bread for dinner. Every day Mary had to work hard. So that day Mary ran away from theorphanage.

　　瑪麗今年八歲，住在一家性格殘酷的女人所開的孤兒院裡。瑪麗每晚只能吃不新鮮的麵包，而且每天都要辛苦地工作;所以那天瑪麗便從孤兒院逃了出來。

　　She walked all over town looking for food or work. She had to keep out of night. If anyone sawher, they would send her back to the orphanage. Mary was so hungry, she even tried to stealfood from a market, but she was caught and she had to run away.

　　她走遍全鎮，希望能找到食物或者工作，而且還要小心不被人看到;如果有人看到她，他們就會把她送回孤兒院、瑪麗獨自很餓，甚至還想去市場頭東西吃，可是被逮到了，只好趕緊逃跑。

　　That night, Mary was very hungry. She met another girl who did not have any parents. "Comewith me," said the girl. "I know where you can get food." Mary followed the girl through a darkroad. The girl took her to the gypsies.

　　那天晚上，瑪麗餓得要命，結果遇到另一個同樣失去雙親的女孩，她說：“跟我來，我知道哪裡有東西吃。”瑪麗跟這名女孩走過一條黑暗的道路，她帶她來到一群吉普賽人那裡。

　　Mary was scared. The gypsies were known for being bad people. But these women werebeautiful. They gave her food and a place to sleep. Mary never went back to the orphanage.

　　瑪麗很害怕，因為吉普賽人士有名的壞人;可是這群女人卻很美麗，還給她東西吃和地方睡覺。瑪麗從此再也沒有回孤兒院了。
