  What do angels look like?

  What do angels look like?

  What Do Angels Look Like?

  They are—

Like the little old lady who returned your wallet yesterday.

Like the taxi driver who told you that your eyes light up the world when you smile.

Like the small child who showed you the wonder in simple things.

Like the poor man who offered to share his lunch with you.

Like the rich man who showed you it really is all possible, if only you believe.

Like the stranger who just happened to come along, when you had lost your way.

Like the friend who touched your heart, when you didn’t think you had one left to touch.

Angels come in all sizes and shapes, all ages and skin types.

Some with freckles, some with dimples, some with wrinkles, some without.

They come disguised as friends, enemies, teachers, students, lovers and fools.

They don’t take life too seriously, they travel light.

They leave no forwarding address, they ask for nothing in return.

They wear sneakers with gossamer wings, they get a deal on dry cleaning.

They are hard to find when your eyes are closed, but they are everywhere you look when you choose to see.

Gifts from the heart

According to legend, a young man while roaming the desert came across a spring of deliciouscrystal-clear water.

  The water was so sweet.

He filled his leather canteen so that hecould bring some back to a tribal elder who had been his teacher.

After a four-day journey he presented the water to the old man who took a deepdrink, smiledwarmly and thanked his student lavishly for the sweet water.

The young man returned to his village with a happy heart.

Later, the teacher let another student taste the water.

He spat it out, saying it was awful.

It apparently had become stale because of the old leather container.

The student challenged his teacher: “Master, the water was foul. Why did you pretend to likeit?”

The teacher replied, “You only tasted the water.

  I tasted the gift.

The water was simply the container for an act of loving-kindness and nothing could besweeter.”

I think we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent gifts of love from youngchildren.

Whether it’s a ceramic tray or a macaroni bracelet, the natural and proper response isappreciation and expressed thankfulness because we love the idea within the gift.

  Gratitude doesn’t always come naturally.

Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing given rather than the feelingembodied in it.

We should remind ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of feelings andexpressions of gratitude.

After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.

Real beauty

When a first-time father cuddled his newborn son,he immediately noticed the baby's earsconspicuously standing out from his head.

He expressed his concern to the nurse that some children might taunt his child, calling himnames like “Dumbo”.

A doctor examined the baby and reassured the new dad that his son was healthy—the earspresented only a minor cosmetic problem.

  But the nervous father persisted.

He wondered if the child might sufferpsychological effects of ridicule,or if they should consider plastic surgery.

The nurse assured him that it was really no problem, and he should just wait to see if the boygrows into his ears.

The father finally felt more optimistic about his child, but now he worried about his wife'sreaction to those large, protruding ears.

She had delivered by cesarean section, and had not yet seen the child.

“She doesn't take things as easily as I do,” he said to the nurse.

By this time, the new mother was settled in the recovery room and ready to meet her newbaby.

The nurse went along with the dad to lend some support in case this inexperienced motherbecame upset about her baby's large ears.

The infant was swaddled in a receiving blanket with his head covered for the short trip throughthe chilly air-conditioned corridor.

The baby was placed in his mother's arms, who eased the blanket back so that she could gazeupon her child for the first time.

She took one look at her baby's face and looked to her husband and gasped,“Oh, Honey! Look!He has your ears!”

  No problem with Mom.

She married those ears...and she loves the man to whom they are attached.

The poet Khalil Gibran said, “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.”

It's hard to see the ears when you're looking into the light.
