  關於有趣的英語故事:The First Well

There once was a small kingdom around a lake. One very hot summer it did not rain and the lake dried up. People grew anxious and went to the king.

"It has not rained for so long. Our fields are barren***貧瘠的***!" said the farmers.

"There's no fish to catch. How shall we earn a living?" asked the fisherman.

"Save us from disaster, good king," urged the women and the children cried with thirst.

The king sent his four generals to search for water in all directions. The first general went east, towards the sunrise, the second to the south, to dust and heat, the third went west, where the sun sets, and the fourth, followed the North Star.

They searched day and night, night and day, high and low, they searched everywhere, but in vain.

Three of the generals returned, empty-handed. But the general who had gone northdetermined, not to fail his king, finally reached a cold mountain village.

As he sat at the foot of the mountain, an old woman came by and sat next to him. The generalpointed at the horizon and said, "I belong to a beautiful kingdom, where it has not rained for a whole year. Can you help me find water?"

The woman motioned the general to follow her up the mountain and inside a cave. "We have no water in our country either," she said. Then, pointing to the icicles***錫尖,冰錐*** in the cave, she continued, "We call this ice. Take some, and your kingdom will never go thirsty again." The general broke off a huge piece, loaded it onto his horse-cart and rushed back home.

By the time he reached the court, the enormous icicle had melted into a small lump of ice. Nobody in the court had ever seen ice, so everybody gazed at it with wonder!

"This must be a water-seed," one of the ministers exclaimed suddenly.

The king ordered the "water-seed" to be sowed immediately. While the farmers dug a hole, the lump dwindled in the sun. They swiftly placed the seed in the hole, but, before they could cover it, it had vanished. The farmers there got confused and worried. They dug the earth deeper and deeper, into the night, looking for the mysterious seed.

At the break of dawn, the king found the farmers fast asleep around a hole. Curiously, he peeped in and cried out in amazement, "Wake up my worthy men, the water-seed hassprouted! There's water in the hole!"

This is how the first well was created.

關於有趣的英語故事:MaLiang and His Magical Writing Brush

There was once a boy called MaLiang. His family was very poor, so poor that he couldn't afford a writing brush. One day on his way home after herding the cattle, he passed by a private school. He saw a painter was painting for an officer. MaLiang lost himself and he walked quickly. He said to the officer, "Could you give me one writing brush to draw pictures?" The officer and the painter laughed at him and drove him out.

MaLiang didn't admit defeat. After that he began to learn to draw by heart. When he went to cut wood fire on the mountain, he would draw with a branch on land. When he went to cut grass by the river, he would draw the fish with the gram root. He drew whatever he saw.

Time passed by quickly and his drawing was better and better. But still he had no writing brush. How he wished he had a writing brush!

Then one night in his dreams an old man gave him a writing brush. The old man told him to draw for the poor. MaLiang took the brush quickly and drew a cock on the wall, the cock was then alive, it jumped down from the wall. Cock-a-doole-doo. It was a magical writing brush, he began to draw for the poor with it every day. What he drew all came true. He drew farm cattle for a farmer and it could plough for him. The officer heard of that and had some soldiers seized him to the officer. He told MaLiang to draw gold for him. MaLiang refused to draw for him, so he was put into prison. At midnight, the guard was fast asleep. Maliang took his brush, drew a door on the wall. When he pulled it the door opened. Then he began to run off with the other prisoners. Then the guards ran after him. Then he drew a horse and rode on it, the guards could not catch up with him at all.

Then one day Maliang was drawing a water cart in a dry place, suddenly several official guards appeared and seized him away. This time the officer told him to draw a gold mountain. MaLiang drew a sea and a gold mountain in the sea. It was full of gold on the mountain. The officer was pleased and cried, "Be quick, draw a big ship. I want to ship gold from the mountain."

Then MaLiang drew a big ship. The officer together with his guards got on the ship and said, "Set off. Be quick." MaLiang then drew some wind. The sail was full and the ship was sailing to the mountain at sea. The officer wanted to be faster. So MaLiang added some more strong winds. The officer became afraid and said, "That's enough. That's enough. No more wind." But MaLiang didn't listen to him ,he went on drawing wind. Now it was blowing more violently. And the waves were as high as mountains. Then the ship was turned over and the officer and his guards were drowned in the sea.

MaLiang came back to the village and drew for the poor again.

  關於有趣的英語故事:Odds And Ends

There was once on a time a maiden who was pretty, but idle***懶惰的*** and negligent***疏忽的***. When she had to spin she was so out of temper that if there was a little knot in theflax***亞麻***, she at once pulled out a whole heap of it, and strewed it about on the ground beside her.

Now she had a servant who was industrious***勤勉的***, and gathered together the bits of flax which were thrown away, cleaned them, span them fine, and had a beautiful gown made out of them for herself. A young man had wooed the lazy girl, and the wedding was to take place. On the eve of the wedding, the industrious one was dancing merrily about in her pretty dress, and the bride said,-

"Ah, how that girl does jump about, dressed in my odds and ends."

The bridegroom heard that, and asked the bride what she meant by it? Then she told him that the girl was wearing a dress make of the flax which she had thrown away. When the bridegroom heard that, and saw how idle she was, and how industrious the poor girl was, he gave her up and went to the other, and chose her as his wife.
