Dong Shi Knits Her Brows in Imitation

Xi Shi was a famous beauty of the State of Yue during the Spring and Autumn Period.

Among Xi Shi's neighbours there was a very ugly woman whom everyone disliked and called "Dong Shi".

Dong Shi was very jealous of Xi Shi's beauty, but there was nothing she could do about it. She could only imitate Xi Shi in every way.

One day, Xi Shi felt pain in her heart, and called a doctor for treatment. Having taken the medicine, Xi Shi went out of her house for a stroll. After taking a few steps, she felt a spasm of pain in her heart. Quickly pressing her bosom, she sat down with knitted brows in a chair in the garden.

Dong Shi saw Xi Shi after long expectation, but she didn't know Xi Shi was ill. She only felt that Xi Shi looked exceptionally beautiful that day.'Therefore, she imitated Xi Shi by pressing her bosom and deliberately knitting her brows to attract people's attention.

Seeing her ugly and grotesque appearance, all the passers-by gave her a wide berth.

Sighing over One's Insignificance Before the Vast Sea

When autumn came, all the water in the large and small rivers rose higher and flowed into the Yellow River. The surface of the River at once appeared much wider. On one side of the bank, one couldn't see the cattle and sheep on the opposite side. The River deity Hebo was therefore immensely proud and considered himself the greatest in the world.

Hebo followed the Yellow River to the North Sea. Looking to the east, he could not see the bounds of the sea. Then he looked at himself and felt he was so tiny and insignificant. He sighed and said to Hairuo, the deity of the North Sea:

"As the saying goes, a person who has gained a little learning tends to regard himself as the wisest person under the sky. I am just that kind of person. Seeing how broad and great you are today, I have come to realize how insignificant and ignorant I am. If I didn't meet you, I'm afraid I would always be laughed at by people with knowledge."

  Hairuo said:

"We cannot talk about the sea with a frog at the bottom of a well, for the frog is restricted by its dwelling place; we cannot talk about ice with a small insect of summer, for the insect is restricted by the seasons; we cannot talk about profound learning with superficial persons, for they have too little knowledge. Now you have come out of a small river to the North Sea, seen the greatness of it and realized your own insignificance. Since you have taken such a modest attitude, I can then talk with you about profound learning."

  Making Features for Hun Dun

The emperor of the South Sea was named "Tiao", the emperor of the North Sea was named "Hu", and the central emperor "Hun Dun".

Tiao and Hu often had contacts with each other and were very intimate. They often met in the central area under Hun Dun's rule and received his warm hospitality.

One day, Tiao and Hu met again and talked about Hun Dun. They were very grateful to him and wished to repay him well.

After discussing for a long time they realized that everyone has seven orifices: the mouth, nostrils, ears, eyes, so that they can eat, smell, listen, and see the beautiful scenery of nature. Only Hun Dun did not have them and could not enjoy these pleasures.

Finally, they thought of a clever way: they decided to bore seven holes on Hun Dun's head. In this way he would be the same as others.

Then, regardless of whether Hun Dun would agree or not, Tiao and Hu began working on him. One took a big chisel and the other swung an iron hammer to bore one hole a day on Hun Dun's head. However, on the seventh day, Hun Dun bled from the seven orifices to death.
