  In the past, someone said:

  從前,有個人說:

  “The pear is good for the teeth, but bad for the spleen; the date is good for the spleen, butbad for the teeth.”

  “吃生梨對牙齒有好處,但是會傷脾;吃紅棗對脾有好處,但是會損害牙齒。”

  A young man heard this, thought it over for a long time and said:

  一個年輕人聽了這句話,想了很久,說道:

  “Then, when I eat a pear, I’ll keep it in my mouth and chew it with my teeth, but won’tswallow it,so it will not do any harm to my spleen.

  “那我吃生梨的時候,就含在嘴裡,用牙齒咀嚼,但是不往肚裡咽,它就損傷不了我的脾。

  When I eat a date, I won’t chew it, but will swallow it whole, so it will not do any harm to myteeth.”

  吃棗的時候,我把它整個兒吞下去,不去咀嚼,這樣就不會損害我的牙齒了。”

  When people heard this, they jeered at him:

  人們聽了他的話,譏笑說:

  “You are swallowing a date whole!”

  “你這是在囫圇吞棗啊!”

  Bo Le was a famous expert in the physiognomy of horses in ancient China.

  伯樂是中國古代有名的相馬專家。

  His book On the Physiognomy of Horses was a classic piece of work on that subject.

  《相馬經》是他的一本相馬的專著。

  Bo Le had a son who wanted to learn his father’s special skill and knowledge.

  伯樂有個兒子很想把父親的技能繼承下來。

  He read the book On the Physiognomy of Horses over and over again.

  他反覆閱讀《相馬經》,

  Whenever he went out, he would carry the book with him,and as soon as he saw a horse,he would take out the book,

  出去相馬時也帶在身邊,一看到馬,就把書拿出來,

  and compare the horse with the drawings of various horses in the book one by one.

  按照書上繪畫的各種馬的圖樣,一一加以對照。

  One day,he finally found a horse which looked similar to the drawing in the book.

  一天,他終於找到了一匹馬,看來跟書上繪著的一樣,

  He led it home to his father, but it turned out to be an inferior horse of fiery temperament,

  牽回家給父親一看,卻是一匹性子很凶悍的劣馬,

  and not a good steed which could gallop 1,000 li a day.Bo Le said to his son:

  而不是日行千里的好馬。伯樂對兒子說:

  “If you look for a steed with the aid of drawings, how can you find a really fine one?”

  “像你這樣照著圖樣找良馬的方法,怎麼能找得到真正的好馬呢?”

  One day, the peachwood charm against evil hung on the door turned its face upward to cursethe figure made of Chinese mugwort:

  一天,掛在門上的桃符仰起了臉,大罵艾草人:

  “Who do you think you are to dare to set yourself over my head?”

  “你這個艾草人算什麼東西,膽敢高踞在我的頭上!”

  The figure of Chinese mugwort, unwilling to be outdone, looked down and retorted:

  艾草人不甘示弱,低頭還嘴,說道:

  “It is summer now. You have only half a year to go, and can’t live long. Why squabble over whois higher or who is lower?”

  “現在已經是夏天了,你只有半年了,活不了多長時間了,還爭什麼高低呢?”

  The peachwood charm was beside itself with rage, and answered back sarcastically.

  桃符怒不可遏,反脣相譏。它們互相不服氣,

  Both sides refused to give in, and squabbled endlessly with a stream of abuse against eachother.

  彼此罵不絕口,爭吵不休。

  At this moment, the deity of the door came to mediate:

  這時候,門神出來勸解說:

  “It is only because we have no ability that we have to attach ourselves to the door of others.What’s the point of quarrelling with each other?”

  “我們都是因為沒有什麼本事,才依附在別人的門下,還爭什麼強,鬥什麼氣呢?”
