:兩個棒球迷
Dave and his twin brother John were too hugebaseball fans. During their entire lives, John andDave talked baseball. They went to sixty games ayear. They even agreed that whoever died first willtry to come back and tell the other if there wasbaseball in heaven.
大衛和他的孿生哥哥約翰是兩個超級棒球迷。他們的一生都在談論棒球。他們每年都要去看60場比賽。他們甚至還約定,無論誰先死,都要盡力回來告訴另一個人天堂是否有棒球。
One night, John passed away in a sleep after watching the Yankee Victory earlier in the evening.A few nights later, Dave awoke to the sound of John's voice from beyond.
一天晚上,約翰看完美國隊獲勝後安然長眠。幾個晚上後,大衛被他從上而來的聲音驚醒。
"John, is that you? Am I dreaming?" Dave asked.
“約翰,是你嗎?我在做夢嗎?”大衛問。
"Yes, it's me." John replied.
“是我。”約翰回到。
"That is unbelievable!" Dave exclaimed, "I have a strong desire to know whether there isbaseball in heaven, tell me!"
“真難以置信!”大衛叫道,“我很想指代天堂是否有棒球。快告訴我。”
"Well, I have some good news and some bad news for you. Which do you want to hear first?"
“我有好和壞的兩個訊息要告訴你,先聽哪個?”
"Tell me the good news first."
“先說好的吧。”
"Well, the good new is that there is baseball in heaven."
“好訊息就是天堂裡真的有棒球。”
"Oh, that is wonderful! So what is the bad news?"
“哦,太好了,那麼壞的呢?”
"You're coming tomorrow night."
“你明晚也要到天堂來了。”
:我看不到
An Irishman was once serving in a regiment in thedesert. He wasn't fond of the climate of the warzone. The temperature sometimes was about 40degrees centigrade, so he decided to think out a trickby which he could get home.
有個愛爾蘭人在沙漠中的部隊服兵役,他不喜歡戰地的氣候,那兒氣候又是會超過40攝氏度。於是他決定想個法子回家。
He went to the doctor and said to him, "I have adisease of the eye. My eyesight is very bad. Can youdo me a service?"
他去看醫生,對醫生說:“我眼睛有毛病,我視力太差了,你能幫助我嗎?”
The doctor stared at him for a while and then asked, "Well, but how can you prove to me thatyour eyesight is bad?"
醫生他一會兒說:“好的,你怎麼能證明你的視力差呢?”
The Irishman looked about the room and at last said, "Well, doctor, can you see that nail on theceiling?"
這個愛爾蘭人看房間最後說道:“呃,醫生,你能看到天花板上的那個釘子嗎?”
"Yes," the doctor glanced at that black dot overhead, then replied.
“是的,”醫生掃了一眼頭頂的那個小黑點說。
"Well," said the Irishman, "But I can't."
“哦,”這個愛爾蘭人說,“我卻看不到。”
:該起床了
After a rough quarrel, Mr. Jones a cab driver, wasvery angry with his wife, and she was very angry withher husband too. For several days, they did notspeak to each other at all.
一場激烈地爭吵之後,計程車司機瓊斯先生非常生妻子的氣,而妻子也非常生他的氣。一連好幾天誰也不理誰。
One evening, Mr. Jones got a headache, so he tooktwo pills and went to bed soon after dinner. Ofcourse, he did not say anything to Mrs. Jones beforehe went upstairs.
一天晚上,瓊斯先生有點頭疼,晚飯後吃了兩片藥不久就上床睡覺了。當然了,在上樓前也沒向太太說什麼。
Mrs. Jones washed the dinner things and then did some sewing. When she went up to bedmuch later than her husband, she found a piece of paper on the small table near her bed. On itwere the words: "Mother, wake me up at 7:00 A.M.—Father".
瓊斯太太刷完鍋碗,又縫縫補補什麼的,上床睡覺要比丈夫晚的多。她發現床頭櫃上有張紙條,上面寫著:“孩他媽,早上七點鐘叫醒我——孩他爹。”
When Mr. Jones woke up next morning, it was nearly 8:00 A.M. And on the small table near hisbed, he saw another piece of paper beneath a book. He took it and read these words: "Father,wake up! It is 7:00 A.M.—Mother".
第二天早晨,當瓊斯先生醒來時,已經快8點了——他在床頭櫃上的一本書下面看見了另一張紙條。他拿起來一看,上面寫著:“孩他爹,該醒了,現在七點鐘了——孩他媽。”
