As the legend goes, in the area of Qian ***now Guizhou Province*** there were no donkeys.

Later, a meddlesome man transported one by boat from somewhere else, but he found it of no use.

So he left the donkey at the foot of a mountain and let it do as it pleased.

A tiger in the mountain, which had never seen a donkey before, thought this huge monster was a divine beast and was rather scared.

Hence, the tiger hid itself in the woods and observed the donkey covertly. After a while, seeing the donkey stand there without movement,

the tiger came out of the woods slowly, approached it cautiously, but couldn’t figure out yet what monster it was.

One day, while the tiger was observing, the donkey suddenly gave a loud cry, which frightened the tiger so much that it took to its heels, for fear that the donkey would devour it.

Yet when turning its head, it discovered that the donkey was still at the same place, without stirring a bit.

The tiger again slowly approached the donkey, gradually got used to its neighs and felt it wasn’t frightful at all.

The tiger came nearer and nearer, and even tried to tease the donkey at times with its paws.

Being very much annoyed, the donkey gave the tiger a good kick. Thus, the tiger felt very pleased and said to itself:

So that’s all the tricks it has.

The tiger gave a big roar, jumped up and pounced ferociously upon the donkey, bit into its throat, devoured its flesh, and went away satisfied.

The deer feared the leopard cat, the leopard cat feared the tiger, and the tiger the brown bear.

The brown bear resembled the fox but was bigger in size. It had long fur on its head, and couldstand up like man. It had great strength and would devour man.

In the south of the State of Chu, there was a hunter good at ventriloquy. With a bamboo pipehe could imitate the cries of various kinds of wild animals.

Once, carrying his bow, arrows and firearms, he quietly went hunting in the mountain.

Up on the mountain, he first imitated the cries of the deer to lure the horde of deer to comeover, so that he could shoot at them with the firearms. The leopard cat heard the cries of thedeer and came running to devour the deer.

The hunter was afraid of the leopard cat, so he hurriedly imitated the roar of the tiger to scareaway the leopard cat. Hardly had the leopard cat been scared away when the tiger heard theroar and came.

At this moment, the hunter was even more frightened, so he imitated the cries of the brownbear. As a result, the tiger was scared away like the leopard cat.

Then, when the brown bear heard the cries, it came to look for its companions. Seeing that itwas a man, the brown bear at once struck him with its front paws, and tore him up with itsteeth. In a short while, the hunter was torn to pieces and devoured by the brown bear.

In the Tang Dynasty, there was a scholar named Lu Sheng.

One day, Lu Sheng went to the capital for the imperial examination On his way when he reached Handan, he stayed at an inn. A Taoist priest surnamed Lii was also staying there. Sitting in his room, Lu Sheng lamented over his poverty and unsuccessful career and sighed in grief with knitted brows and a long face.

As the Taoist priest Lu saw Lu Sheng in such a state, he took out a pillow from his pocket, gave it to him and said:

“Try sleeping with this pillow under your head. It may be good for you.”

Lu Sheng went to bed as told, while the owner of the inn was steaming millet. With the Taoist priest’s pillow, Lu Sheng fell asleep and had a dream. In his dream, he married the daughter of a high official surnamed Cui in Qinghe and he himself also became an official.

He had a brilliant career as an official and often got promoted. Once he went to fight against the enemy and rendered outstanding service. Thus he rose higher and higher in officialdom till he became the Minister of Revenue and concurrently Imperial Law Enforcement Official.

Later, someone was jealous of him and framed a case of conspiracy against him. The emperor ordered to have his house ransacked, his property confiscated, and him condemned.

After a few years, the emperor reinstated him to his original post. He had a large family with lots of children and grandchildren, and enjoyed great wealth and high position as before. In his old age, he fell ill, could not be cured, and eventually died.

Lu Sheng woke up from his dream and found himself still sleeping at the inn, with the Taoist priest Lu sitting beside him. The millet which the owner of the inn had been steaming was not yet done.
