Rising Moon

There is a hill near my home that I often climb at night.

The noise of the city is a far-off whisper when I climb it. In the dark I share the cheerfulness of crickets and the leisure of owls. duanwenw But what I come to see is the wonder of the moon rise. It gives me peacefulness and simplicity4 that the city exhausts too easily.

From this hill I have watched many moons rise. Each one had its own mood. There have been broad and beautiful moons in autumn; shy and misty moons in spring; lonely and white winter moons rising into the absolute silence of an ink- black sky and orange moons over the dry fields of summer. Each, like fine music, excited my heart and calmed my soul.

We, who live indoors, have lost contact with the moon. The rays of street lights and the dust of pollution cover the night sky. Though man has walked on the moon, in a way it is less familiar. Few of us can say what time the moon will rise tonight.

Still, it resonates with us. If we unexpectedly come across the full moon, huge and yellow over the horizon, we can’t help staring back at its beautiful appearance, duanwenw and the moon has gifts to those who watch it.

By enjoying the bright moon, we can melt6 into the quiet of the night.

Tolerance is painful, but its fruits is sweet.

A man meets a guru in the road. The man asks the guru, "Which way is success?" The berobed, bearded sage speaks not, but points to a place off in the distance.

The man, thrilled by the prospect of quick and easy success, rushes off in the appropriate direction. Suddenly, there comes a loud "SPLAT." Eventually, the man limps back, tattered and stunned, assuming he must have misinterpreted the message. He repeats his question to the guru, duanwenw who again points silently in the same direction.

The man obediently walks off once more. This time the splat is deafening, and when the man crawls back, he is bloody, broken, tattered, and irate. "I asked you which way is success," he screams at the guru. "I followed the direction you indicated. And all I got was splatted! No more of this pointing! Talk!"

Only then does the guru speak, and what he says is this: "Success IS that way. Just a little PAST splat."

The Joy of Living

The joy of living comes from having fine emotions, trusting them and giving them the freedom of a bird in the open.

The joy of living can never be assumed1 as a pose or put on a mask.

People who have this joy do not need to talk about it; they radiate it. duanwenw They live out their joy and let it shine its sunlight and glow into the lives of others as naturally as a bird sings and gold glows.

We can never get it by working for it directly. It comes, like happiness, to those who are aiming at something higher. It is a product of great yet simple living.

The joy of living comes from what we put into living, not from what we seek to get from it.

There are many kinds of joys of living, such as hearing birds singing and appreciating the smell of flowers. xiaogushi8 You will feel joyous when you see high mountains with waterfalls cascading down, or broad rivers flowing along on their never-ending journeys to the sea. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratitude that makes us happy.

It is the joy of living to help others and to be helped by others. Not only can we take pleasure in living in society, but we can also enjoy society by contributing to it.
