超級市場（Supermarket）是一種大型的零售業商店，以現代化的方式經營，力求有效率的物流，達至薄利多銷，通常是連鎖式的。 店內一般有大量的不同品牌、價格、種類的貨品，有序地排列，以方便顧客可以在同所商店購買所有所需。

超級市場產生於1930年的美國紐約，被稱為零售業的第三次革命。 1930年8月美國人邁克爾·庫侖（Michael Cullen）在美國紐約州開設了第一家超級市場--金庫侖聯合商店。當時，美國正處在經濟大危機時期，邁克爾·庫侖根據他幾十年食品經營經驗精確設計了低價策略，並首創商品品種別定價方法。它的超級市場平均毛利率只有9％，這和當時美國一般商店25-40％的毛利率相比是令人吃驚的。為了保證售價的低廉，必須做到進貨價格的低廉，只有大量進貨才能壓低進價，邁克爾·庫侖就以連鎖的方式開設分號，建立起保證大量進貨的銷售系統。它首創了自助式銷售方式，採取一次性集中結算。 20世紀30年代中期以後，超級市場這種零售組織形式由美國逐漸傳到了日本和歐洲。在我國，超級市場被引入於1978年，當時稱作自選商場。
