電影院（cinema）是為觀眾放映電影的場所。電影在產生初期，是在咖啡廳、茶館等場所放映的。隨著電影的進步與發展，出現了專門為放映電影而建造的電影院。電影的發展——從無聲到有聲乃至立體聲，從黑白片到彩色片，從普通銀幕到寬銀幕乃至穹幕、環幕，使電影院的形體、尺寸、比例和聲學技術都發生了很大變化。電影院必須滿足電影放映的工藝要求，得到應有的良好視覺和聽覺效果，電影已經成為人們飯後的論點。 2017年12月1日，《公共服務領域英文譯寫規範》正式實施，規定電影院標準英文名為Cinema或Movie Theater。 2020年7月16日，國家電影局釋出通知，低風險地區電影院7月20日開放營業。要求全部採取網路實名預約、無接觸方式售票；實行交叉隔座售票，陌生觀眾間距1米以上；每場上座率不得超過30%；監督進入影院區域的工作人員和觀眾必須全程佩戴口罩。 2020年8月12日，北京市電影局下發本市影院通知，從8月14日起，全市影院上座率上限由30%調至50%。 2020年9月25日起，實行中國電影發行放映協釋出的《電影放映場所恢復開放疫情防控指南》（第三版），全部採取網路實名預約、無接觸方式售票；原則上每場上座率不得超過75%。
