自然，道家術語。東漢至六朝的佛教深受道教自然影響。至南北朝時期左右本土化佛教逐漸完成，由佛教所挑起的關於自然、因緣的爭論。《楞嚴經》：“非因緣生，非自然性”，《道德真經廣聖義》：“以無為體，以無為用，自然為體，因緣為用。此皆無也。” 與道家/教重視自然原則不同， 早期佛教認為世界萬法都是因緣而成，均無其獨立自性，因而是不真實的。這種透過分析主義的思維途徑來論證事物虛幻不實的作法為其後大乘佛教所繼承。大乘佛教進一步提出緣起論以對世界做性空的價值判斷。這種透過層層分析達至的空相對中國傳統重視陰陽和合的思想傳統， 實在缺乏強制性。道理很簡單， 因為中國人根本就不認為陰陽和合的事物不真實， 反而認為事物只有透過陰陽和合才能達至更高的善與美。這應當與中國古代重視綜合性、 整體性思維方式密切相關。 貝錦以繁採發揮， 和羹以鹽梅致旨， 齊侯追爽鳩之樂， 燕王無延年之術。恐和合之辨， 危脆之教， 正足戀其嗜慾之私， 無以傾其愛競之惑也。
