南方，指秦嶺淮河以南，青藏高原以東的地區，常特指位於一特定的或暗示的方位點以南的地區。在我國，“南方地區”一般指秦嶺-淮河一線以南的廣大地區。 南方面積約佔全國陸域面積的25%，人口約佔全國的52%，漢族佔大多數。區內的少數民族有30多個，其人數5000多萬，主要分佈在雲、貴、川、渝、湘、桂、瓊等地，人數較多的為壯、苗、彝、土家、布依、侗、白、哈尼、傣、黎等族。
