電燈（英文名Electric lamp），將電能轉化為光能，以提供照明的裝置。1809年，英國化學家戴維發明了電燈。為人類文明的發展做出了很大貢獻，給人類帶來了光明。 電燈按光源一般分為白熾燈、氣體放電燈和其他電光源三大類。 愛迪生認為，延長白熾燈壽命的關鍵是提高燈泡的真空度和採用耗電少、發光強、耐熱且價格便宜的材料作燈絲。歷經13個月的研究，試驗過6000多種材料，1879年10月21日，愛迪生把一根直徑為0.025釐米炭化了的棉線用作燈絲，使電燈穩定地亮了45個小時。
