經驗主義作為認識論中的一種派別，認為經驗是人的一切知識或觀念的唯一來源。作為認識論的概念，經驗主義是同唯理論對立的，經驗一詞主要指與理性認識相區別的感性認識階段。經驗主義往往片面提高經驗或感性認識的作用和確定性，不同程度地貶低甚至否定理性認識的作用和確定性。根據對經驗內容的解釋，在哲學基本立場上，經濟論又分為唯物主義經驗主義和唯心主義經驗主義。作為一種工作作風和行為，經驗主義指片面誇大狹隘經驗、輕視理論指導的行為。
