　　20世紀50年代以來，環境汙染問題越來越引起世界各國的普遍重視。1972年6月5日，聯合國在瑞典首都斯德哥爾摩舉行了首次人類環境會議，通過了著名的《人類環境宣言》及保護全球環境的“行動計劃”，規定了人類對全球環境的權利與義務的共同原則。同年10月，第27屆聯大根據斯德哥爾摩會議的建議，決定成立聯合國環境規劃署，並正式將6月5日定為“世界環境日***World Environment Day***”。從1974年起，聯合國環境規劃署每年都根據當年的世界主要環境問題及熱點，有針對性地制定世界環境日的主題。

　　2005年，“營造綠色城市 呵護地球家園”。中國主題是“人人蔘與，建立綠色家園 ”
