Don't overpack when you go to college and pack for the climate that you are in.

Remember that ironing can become tiring and is not the most exciting college activity. Drycleaning bills do add up also. Consider packing clothes that wrinkle less and clothes that don'tneed dry cleaning.

Meet as many fellow students as you can during orientation. It's a great time to meeteveryone. Sometimes the people you meet during orientation become your best friends.

Get well acquainted with your campus and explore the campus, the buildings, and its history. Go into buildings that you would otherwise not go into.

Walk around campus before your classes begin and get familiar with where you are going andwhat times your classes are.

Have a schedule that you can handle and vary your courses. Don't enroll in more than threereading intensive courses.

Find out who the best professors are from your friends and take their classes. The professor canmake the course better than the actual subject if they are really good.

Try to fulfill your core requirements and get them out of the way early on in college.

Seek advice from older students and of course your advisor. They are experienced with manyof the things you will go through and they can help. Don't wait for them to come to you, go tothem.

Don't decide on your major right away. Take some time to think about it and then decide whatinterests you most. Remember that majors are not geared for careers or entering the "realworking world." If majors were geared only to prepare you for a job and career, then manycompanies wouldn't have training programs.

When registering for classes try not to schedule classes that are back to back. If you do, youwon't have time to study right before or after class and it also can wear you out.

Try not to drop classes too early. Go to few of the classes and then decide if you should drop it. -Don't give up on a class if it seems too difficult. You could do well in a difficult class that youfind to be challenging with help from a tutor or a peer.

Auditing classes at university is an ideal way of learning or trying out new areas of studywithout committing yourself.

You can study alongside fellow students without any obligation to participate in formalassessments or gain credits for your degree.

The trend of auditing university classes has swept across universities. Recently, FudanPostgraduate, a publication by Fudan University, even released a map guide on its campus. Altogether, it features 25 courses, including details of lectures, venues, times andrecommendations. Students can design their own auditing route based on a handy map.

“It is relaxing for us to take individual modules or units on a casual basis without committingourselves to completing those studies in order to gain credits, a degree or an award,” said ZhuYanni, 22, a postgraduate majoring in environment management at Fudan University.

Zhu, editor of the guide, said that she has benefited from the trend herself – she successfullymoved from a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry to her current one after auditing classes.

“Visiting classes helped me a lot. The teachers of outstanding courses seldom teach strictlyaccording to textbooks, which is attractive to students. Their tutoring methods have expandedmy mind,” Zhu said.

Other students audit purely out of interest. Shi Shuai, 22, a senior majoring inadministration management at Shantou University, attended courses in economics andfinance for one year.

“It is a great way to explore professional knowledge outside your major,” said Shi, whoacquired the basics of accounting and finance management.

“When you study by yourself in a library, you can’t enjoy live group discussions or courseworkparticularly designed for students.”

Despite the advantages of learning in an open environment, university administrators remindus that there are still rules to follow.

Not all classes accept outsiders, especially minority language classes and science modules. These are often taught in small groups to ensure the effectiveness of learning, or require specialequipment and individual instruction, which is only available to registered students who paytuition fees.

Regulations vary across departments and universities. According to Huang Xiaoxiong, ajournalism teacher at Fudan University, students need to ensure that auditing a class ispermitted. “It is about basic manners. You need to let the teacher know about your existence,” he explained.

Even if a teacher allows students to audit a class, visitors should be careful not to occupy theteacher’s time.

“It’s polite to greet the teacher when attending a course. Participate in discussions, but do notdistract others,” Huang added. “It’s okay to hand in homework assigned by the teacher, butexpect general advice rather than careful correction.”

Auditing classes aimlessly or beyond one’s ability can be a waste of time, warns Xu Jun, 27, HRmanager at Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group. “It’s good to audit some classes. But youhave to manage your time well, as you can’t get any academic credit or formal recognitionfor these courses,” Xu suggested.

“Even though your interests are important, your degree is the first thing to consider atuniversity.”
