荊棘

荊棘是一種植物，它原來是指兩種植物：荊和棘。 棘與荊在野外常混生，因此就產生“荊棘”。荊：荊條，無刺；棘，酸棗，有刺。兩者常叢生為叢莽。也泛指叢生於山野間的帶棘小灌木。荊棘叢生最易阻塞道路，又借喻作艱險處境或者紛亂局面，成語“披荊斬棘”和“荊天棘地”由此引申而來。
