茶具選材廣泛，金、木、竹、陶皆可取。茶具，古代又稱茗器，同其他飲、食具一樣，它的發生和發展經歷了一個從無到有，從粗糙到精緻的過程。歷史上最古老的茶具，大約可推陶土製的缶，類似今天四川、雲南的烤茶罐，它既可用來煮茶，也可作盛具用。唐代茶神陸羽在《茶經·四之器》中列出了28種茶具的名稱。 唐文學家皮日休《茶具十詠》中所列出的茶具種類有“茶塢、茶人、茶筍、茶籝、茶舍、茶灶、茶焙、茶鼎、茶甌、煮茶。”其中“茶塢”是指種茶的凹地。“茶人”指採茶者，如《茶經》說：“茶人負以(茶具)採茶也。”
