音樂劇由喜歌劇及輕歌劇（或稱“小歌劇”）演變而成的，早期稱作“音樂喜劇”，後來簡稱為“音樂劇”，是19世紀末起源於英國的一種歌劇體裁，是由對白和歌唱相結合而演出的戲劇形式。音樂劇熔戲劇、音樂、歌舞等於一爐，富於幽默情趣和喜劇色彩。音樂劇在全世界各地都有上演，但演出最頻密的地方是美國紐約市的百老匯和英國的倫敦西區。因此百老匯音樂劇這個稱謂可以指在百老匯地區上演的音樂劇，又往往可是泛指所有近似百老匯風格的音樂劇。而習慣上稱呼為音樂劇的戲劇，多是指西方音樂劇。
