壽星，本為恆星名，為福、祿、壽三星之一。秦始皇統一天下後，在杜縣建壽星祠。後壽星演變成仙人名稱，又稱南極仙翁、南極老人、長生大帝，是中國神話中的長壽之神，也是道教神仙，極受尊敬與喜愛。 明朝小說《西遊記》寫壽星“手捧靈芝”，長頭大耳短身軀。《警世通言》有“福、祿、壽三星度世”的神話故事。畫像中壽星為白鬚老翁，持杖，額部隆起。古人作長壽老人的象徵，常襯托以鹿、鶴、仙桃等。 在1998年版電視劇《西遊記2》中，南極仙翁由演員孫季卿飾演。
