手球，是一種起源於歐洲的球類運動，是綜合籃球和足球的特點而發展起來的一種用手打球、以球攻入對方球門得分的球類運動。 1936年，在第十一屆奧運會上成為正式比賽專案，之後因為戰爭中斷。1938年，首屆世界男子手球錦標賽在德國舉行。1957年7月13日，首屆世界女子手球錦標賽在南斯拉夫舉行。1972年第20屆奧運會，手球再次被列為奧運會比賽專案。1982年，第九屆新德里亞運會第一次將手球列入正式比賽專案。 手球的最高組織機構為國際手球聯合會，簡稱國際手聯，1928年成立，總部位於瑞士。中國的手球官方組織為中國手球協會，1979年9月成立於河北省保定市，總部設於北京市。
