黑體字是現代漢字體系中最重要的字型之一。尤其是隨著20 世紀末電腦和網際網路的普及，黑體字的價值得到了進一步體現，它簡潔的筆畫特徵與屏顯介質特性相符，從而成為了當今各種螢幕媒介中最有發展前景的字型。但是，關於這款字的專案研究，迄今為止尚付闕如，關於它的源起（產生的時間、地點、樣式）更是沒有準確答案。對這些問題的忽視使得黑體字設計及其應用變成缺少歷史參照的無本之木、無源之水，嚴重製約著黑體字的發展。黑體字的特點是：主要筆畫粗壯，帶有纖細筆觸，字形緊聚，不用弧線。這種字型在德國和奧地利一直使用到第二次世界大戰之後。列印經常用的字型之一，一般用於印刷、書面報告等比較正式的場合，多用於標題或標識重點。
