  Dear editor,

I'm a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey--"Who do you turn to when in trouble?" Here are the results.

Most of the students will go to their classroom or friends when in trouble they're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troupes and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.

In my opinion, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parent, friends or classmates for help.

jokhang temple is the spiritual center of tibet. everyday pilgrims from every corner of tibet trek a long distance to the temple. some of them even progress prostrate by body length to the threshold of the temple. pilgrims fuel myriad of flickering butter lamps with yak butter, or honor their deities with white scarves ***kha-btags or hada*** while murmuring sacred mantras to show their pieties to the buddha.

it lies at the center of the old lhasa. built in 647 by songtsen gampo and his two foreign wives, it has a history of more than 1,300. it was said that nepal princess tritsun decided to build a temple to house the jowo sakyamuni aged 12 brought by chinese princess wencheng. princess wencheng reckoned according to chinese astrology that the temple should be built on the pool where the jokhang now locates. she contended that the pool was a witch's heart, so the temple should be built on the pool to get rid of evils. the pool still exists under the temple. then goats were used as the main pack animals, as is the reason the city is called lhasa. the construction took 12 months. however it was originally small and had been expanded to today's scale in later dynasties. when the fifth dalai lama took reign, large-scale reconstruction and renovation had been done. the temple is a combination of han, tibetan and nepalese architectural techniques. visitors will see sphinx and other weird and sacred sculptures.

the temple keeps many invaluable cultural relics. the most famous and valuable one is the jowo sakyamuni aged 12, which is circumambulated by thousands of pilgrims day and night. on his sides, there are altars of songtsen gampo and his two wives who introduced buddhism into tibet. the murals in the main hall are also worth seeing, depicting the procession of princess wencheng arriving in tibet and the building of the jokhang temple while other murals tell jataka stories. two thangkas imaging yamantaka and chakrasamvara from the ming dynasty ***1368-1644*** still remain in perfect condition. the gold bumpa ***a vase*** upon which the reincarnations of dalai lama and panchen lama are decided, musical instruments brought into tibet by wencheng and other important stuffs are also kept here.

every year, the great prayer festival will be held in the temple. the rites of dalai lamas and panchen lamas' initiation into lamahood are also held in the monastery.

the other day i asked my nine year old younger brother what he liked to do for fun in his leisure time. he seemed to regard it as an odd question. "i don't actually have much leisure time." he said. "homework, tennis lessons and piano lessons.., eat it all up. i have three piano lessons a week now."i was startled. i used to consider it was only gown ups who were suffering from great pressure. now the modern competitive world seems to have worked on children alike. i do not think kids have as much fun as they used to. competition keeps getting in the way. leisure seems to have become a luxury.

according to a recent survey, more than 80 percent of americans complain that they do not have the time to do what they really want to do, let alone enjoy the leisure time. it is a tragedy. we live in a constraint state, unable to pursue our interests.the so-called past pace of information society has made most people feel uncomfortable. computer, microwave, gimmicks and gadgets, all these appliances require far more complicated knowledge and techniques than ever before. and just to feel more secure about their relationship with technology, people make great efforts to follow the heels of the latest inventions, weary, reluctant and unhappy.i know lots of people who avoid recreation because they lack the time or the energy. achievement is the national god, worshipped in our media the million dollar athlete, the wealthy executive and glorified in our praise of possessions. in the presence of such a influential state religion, how can people ever "waste" their valuable time on taking up such "extravagance" as leisure when they could have learned or earned more during that period?

ambition, drive and the desire to excel are all great within limits, but we should not allow them to be the whole story of our life. sometimes we should forget about doing best all the time, focusing on relaxation, enjoyment, and health. for the purpose of not collapsing under enormous pressure, an occasional break from our daily routine is necessary. we can make stress work for us instead of against us.
